CURRENT FORMAT

How the Yale SOM video questions work

For the 2026-27 MBA application, Yale SOM asks applicants to answer two prerecorded video questions after submitting the application and paying the application fee. The questions are asked by members of the admissions team and are similar to questions you might encounter in a typical interview.

You have 60 seconds to answer each question. Yale does not publish a separate preparation countdown for the current MBA format, so this simulator does not add one. You can use Yale's practice tool before beginning the official questions to become familiar with the experience.

The video questions are not the admissions interview. Yale says they help the Admissions Committee assess communication and English-language skills and add another dimension to the application. The school also says they are reviewed with a “light touch” and are not intended to make or break your candidacy.

Enable your camera, then answer naturally within 60 seconds. Recording is optional and stays entirely on your device.

Timing note: Yale's current MBA application guide specifies 60 seconds to deliver each response but does not publish a separate preparation timer. This simulator therefore starts the 60-second response immediately after the question is shown.

HOW TO PREPARE

What to practice for the Yale SOM video questions

Yale explicitly says the questions are similar to normal interview questions and do not require specialized knowledge or extensive preparation. The useful preparation is getting comfortable thinking aloud, communicating clearly and reaching your main point within one minute.

Know your experiences, but do not script them

Review the experiences, decisions and goals behind your application so useful examples come to mind quickly. Do not memorize complete answers. Yale specifically wants spontaneous responses in your own voice.

Practice behavioral questions

Be ready to explain what you did in a real situation, why you did it and what happened. A simple structure can help, but the answer should still sound conversational rather than rehearsed.

Make 60 seconds feel normal

A minute is enough for one clear idea and a useful example, but not for a long introduction or several competing points. Practice finishing naturally instead of trying to fill every second.

Do not chase old Yale question lists

Yale changed the MBA format from the older three-question structure to two questions. Use reported themes as practice material if useful, but train the skill of answering an unfamiliar interview-style prompt rather than trying to predict your exact questions.

YALE SOM VIDEO QUESTIONS FAQ

Common questions about the Yale SOM video assessment

How many Yale SOM MBA video questions are there?

For the 2026-27 MBA application, Yale SOM uses two prerecorded video questions.

How long do I have to answer each Yale video question?

You have 60 seconds to deliver each response.

How much preparation time does Yale SOM give?

Yale's current MBA application guide does not publish a separate preparation time. It states that applicants receive two prerecorded questions and have 60 seconds to deliver each response. For that reason, this simulator does not invent an additional prep countdown.

Are the Yale video questions the same as the MBA interview?

No. Yale explicitly says the video questions are not a substitute for the admissions interview. Interviews are a separate, invitation-only stage of the process.

When do I complete the Yale SOM video questions?

They become available after you submit your MBA application and pay the application fee. Yale considers the application complete after the required post-submission components, including the video questions, are finished.

What is Yale assessing through the video questions?

Yale says the component helps assess communication and English-language skills while giving the Admissions Committee a more dynamic, multi-dimensional view of the applicant.

Should I memorize answers?

No. Yale specifically warns against reading from a script or relying heavily on prepared notes. The purpose is to hear how you communicate spontaneously in your own voice.

Does this practice tool upload my recording?

No. Recording is optional, and any recording you make remains locally on your device. My Video Interview Prep does not upload your camera or microphone recording to us.
