How the Berkeley Haas video essay works
Berkeley Haas uses a known video essay prompt, not a randomized interview question. Haas asks applicants to introduce themselves briefly and share something that may not be evident elsewhere in the application.
“Briefly introduce yourself, then tell us what makes you feel alive when you are doing it, and why?”
Haas says the video should last 1–2 minutes and may not exceed 2 minutes. Applicants can test their setup and receive two attempts to record the essay. Because the prompt is known in advance, this simulator does not invent a preparation countdown.

Practice the skill, not a script
Know your examples
Review the experiences, decisions and goals behind your application so useful examples come to mind quickly. Do not memorize complete answers.
Give the answer a simple structure
Make your main point early, support it with a concrete example or reason, and finish with a clear takeaway. STAR can help with behavioral questions, but do not force every response into the same formula.
Make the timing feel familiar
Practice enough to understand what the response window feels like. Aim to finish naturally rather than racing to fill every second.
Review delivery as well as content
Look into the camera, stay composed and speak conversationally. If you record yourself, focus on one or two useful adjustments rather than trying to make every attempt perfect.
